Swimming pool volume is computed as surface area times average depth, then converted at 7.48052 US gallons per cubic foot. Average depth is what makes a sloped-floor pool tractable: for a simple constant slope it is the mean of the shallow and deep end depths, so a 30 by 15 foot pool running 3.5 feet to 6 feet averages 4.75 feet and holds about 15,980 gallons. Pools with a flat shallow shelf, a hopper bottom, or a break line need the floor split into sections and the volumes added, since a single mean overstates capacity when the deep end is a small hopper. Freeform and kidney shapes are conventionally estimated at about 75 percent of their bounding rectangle, and oval shapes at pi/4, or 78.5 percent. Every other number on the page is proportional to this volume, so an error here propagates into chemistry, heating, and equipment sizing alike. Chemical dosing is quoted per 10,000 gallons for exactly that reason. Public health guidance keeps free chlorine in the range of 1 to 3 parts per million with pH held between 7.2 and 7.8, because chlorine efficacy collapses as pH rises: hypochlorous acid, the active biocide, makes up roughly 75 percent of free chlorine at pH 7.0 but only about 25 percent at pH 8.0. Total alkalinity of 60 to 120 ppm buffers that pH, calcium hardness of 200 to 400 ppm protects plaster surfaces, and cyanuric acid at 30 to 50 ppm shields chlorine from ultraviolet destruction while excessive levels above roughly 100 ppm measurably slow disinfection. Heating scales with water mass at about 8.34 BTU per gallon per degree Fahrenheit, so raising a 20,000 gallon pool one degree takes roughly 167,000 BTU before losses. Those losses dominate operating cost, since evaporation accounts for the majority of heat lost from an uncovered pool, which is why a cover is the single most effective heating measure available. Deliberate pool disinfection began with drinking water. In 1908 John L. Leal, working with the engineer George Warren Fuller, applied continuous chloride of lime dosing to the Jersey City supply in New Jersey, the first sustained municipal chlorination in the United States, and the dramatic drop in waterborne disease that followed made chlorine the default disinfectant within a decade. Swimming pools adopted the practice almost immediately; a pool at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island is generally credited as the first in the United States to be continuously chlorinated, around 1910. The chemistry that governs dosing came later: Wilfred Langelier of the University of California, Berkeley published his saturation index in 1936, giving operators a way to balance pH, alkalinity, calcium, and temperature so that water neither corroded metal nor deposited scale. Cyanuric acid stabilizer entered pool practice in the late 1950s and changed outdoor chlorine management permanently by slowing photolytic loss. Standardization of the equipment and the water itself followed the postwar backyard pool boom. Trade bodies including the organization now known as the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance issued consensus standards on circulation, turnover, and barrier safety, and these were folded into model building regulation when the International Code Council published the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code in 2012, giving jurisdictions a single adoptable document covering construction and equipment. On the public health side, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the first Model Aquatic Health Code in 2014, an unusual voluntary model code assembled from outbreak data on cryptosporidium and other recreational water illnesses, which pushed operators toward tighter chlorine and pH control and toward secondary disinfection such as ultraviolet treatment.
