Entering length and width in feet but depth in inches and dividing by 324 lands directly on cubic yards, the unit bulk suppliers sell in. The reciprocal is worth knowing: one cubic yard spreads 108 square feet at 3 inches deep, 162 square feet at 2 inches, and 324 square feet at a single inch. Bagged mulch is usually 2 cubic feet, so a cubic yard is 13.5 bags. Weight varies widely by material, from about 400 pounds per cubic yard for dry shredded bark to 800 or more for wet hardwood or compost-blended product. Depth is chosen against competing effects. Two to three inches is standard for established beds, and 3 to 4 inches improves weed suppression by blocking light from reaching germinating seeds. For most of its history the material was whatever was locally abundant and free: straw, spoiled hay, leaves, seaweed near coasts, and manure. Its function was understood empirically long before soil physics explained why a surface layer breaks the capillary path that draws moisture up to evaporate. The modern bagged and bulk mulch industry is a mid-twentieth century byproduct of forestry and sawmilling. Bark, previously a disposal problem at lumber mills, was shredded and marketed as a landscape product, and later municipal green waste and tree service chips were folded into the same supply chain, tying mulch availability to wood processing rather than to farms. As landscape installation became a professional trade, the cubic yard replaced informal measures, and application depth moved from habit toward specification. University extension programs and the arboriculture community drove the more recent correction, publishing repeated warnings through the 1990s and 2000s that excessive depth and trunk-piled mulch were damaging landscape trees.
