A construction sealant joint is a working joint, not a filler: it must stretch and compress as the substrate moves with temperature and moisture. Quantity follows directly from the bead cross-section, width times depth in square inches, multiplied by joint length. Twelve inches of a 3/8 by 3/8 in joint holds about 1.69 cu in, and a standard 10.3 fl oz cartridge holds roughly 18.6 cu in, so one tube runs about 11 linear feet of that joint. A 20 fl oz sausage pack holds about 36 cu in. A 10 to 15 percent waste allowance covers tooling losses, nozzle cutting and the residue that cannot be pushed out of a cartridge. Joint geometry matters as much as volume. For joints from 1/4 to 1/2 in wide, a width-to-depth ratio near 2:1 is the target, with a closed-cell or bicellular backer rod setting the depth and forming the hourglass bead profile that keeps strain low at the bond lines and prevents three-sided adhesion. Movement capability is graded under ASTM C920 in classes such as 12.5, 25, 35 and 50, the number being the percentage of joint width the sealant can accommodate. Chemistries are not interchangeable: silicone stays elastic from roughly minus 40 to 300 degrees F and resists ultraviolet exposure but is generally unpaintable and bonds poorly to porous substrates, polyurethane adheres well to concrete and masonry and accepts paint, and acrylic latex is a low-movement interior product. Most field failures trace to missing primer, damp or dusty substrate, or joints cut too narrow to accommodate the movement.

Before elastomeric chemistry, building joints were packed with oil-based putties, oakum and hot-poured bituminous compounds that hardened and cracked within a few years. The change came from polysulfide polymers developed by the American chemist Joseph C. Patrick, whose Thiokol Corporation commercialized the material from the 1920s onward. Polysulfide sealants gave the first genuinely elastic, long-lived construction joint sealant and were used on curtain-wall buildings from the early 1950s. Silicone sealants followed as Dow Corning and General Electric commercialized room-temperature vulcanizing silicone rubber in the same decade, and polyurethane sealants reached the construction market in the 1960s. Standardization followed the products. ASTM C920, the specification for elastomeric joint sealants, classifies materials by type, grade, class and use, consolidating an earlier generation of separate one-part and two-part specifications, while ASTM C1193 provides the companion guide to joint design and application. The Sealant, Waterproofing and Restoration Institute, formed in the 1970s, and its validation programs pushed field practice on backer rod use, avoidance of three-sided adhesion, and substrate priming. The disposable cartridge and lever caulking gun, which fixed the 10.3 fl oz package as the industry unit in North America, made hand-applied sealant practical outside specialized crews, and is the reason coverage tables are still written in tubes per linear foot rather than in volume.
