Formula: Churn Rate = (Customers Lost / Customers at Start) × 100 | Retention = 100 - Churn Rate
Worked example — 4.0% monthly churn | $4,720/mo lost | LTV: $1,475
Formula
Churn Rate = (Customers Lost / Customers at Start) × 100 | Retention = 100 - Churn Rate
Churn rate is the percentage of customers lost during a period. Retention rate is its complement. Annual churn compounds monthly: Annual = 1 - (1 - Monthly Rate)^12. Average customer lifetime in months = 1 / Monthly Churn Rate.
Worked Examples
Example 1: SaaS Monthly Churn
Problem:A SaaS company starts the month with 2,000 customers and loses 80. ARPU is $59/month. Calculate churn rate and revenue impact.
Solution:Churn rate: 80/2,000 = 4.0% Retention rate: 96.0% Monthly revenue lost: 80 × $59 = $4,720 Annual churn rate: 1 - (0.96)^12 = 38.7% Avg lifetime: 1/0.04 = 25 months LTV: 25 × $59 = $1,475
Result:4.0% monthly churn | $4,720/mo lost | LTV: $1,475
Example 2: Low-Churn Enterprise Product
Problem:500 enterprise customers, 5 lost this month, $299/mo ARPU.
Solution:Churn rate: 5/500 = 1.0% Annual churn: 1 - (0.99)^12 = 11.4% Monthly revenue lost: 5 × $299 = $1,495 Avg lifetime: 1/0.01 = 100 months LTV: 100 × $299 = $29,900
Result:1.0% monthly churn | LTV: $29,900
Frequently Asked Questions
What is customer churn rate?
Customer churn rate is the percentage of customers who cancel or stop using your product during a given period. It is calculated as: Churn Rate = (Customers Lost / Customers at Start of Period) x 100. For example, if you start the month with 1,000 customers and lose 50, your monthly churn rate is 5%. Churn is the inverse of retention — a 5% churn rate means a 95% retention rate.
What is a good churn rate for SaaS?
There is no universal target, and the published benchmark tables in circulation disagree with each other because they use different denominators, different definitions of a churned account and self-selected samples. What is reliable is the direction of the drivers. Churn falls as contract length rises, so annual and multi-year agreements churn far less per month than month-to-month plans. It falls as deal size and switching costs rise, which is why enterprise accounts embedded in a customer workflow leave less often than self-serve consumer subscriptions. It falls as the product moves from discretionary to operationally necessary. The practical test is internal rather than comparative: is churn trending down cohort over cohort, and does the implied customer lifetime, 1 divided by monthly churn, exceed your CAC payback period by a comfortable margin? If it does not, the rate is too high for your business whatever a benchmark says.
How does churn rate affect customer lifetime value?
Average customer lifetime in months equals 1 divided by the monthly churn rate. With 5% monthly churn, average lifetime is 20 months. With 2% churn, it is 50 months. LTV = Average Lifetime x Revenue Per Customer Per Month. Reducing churn from 5% to 2% increases customer lifetime by 2.5x, which directly multiplies your LTV by 2.5x. This is why churn reduction is often the highest-ROI investment for subscription businesses.
What is the difference between customer churn and revenue churn?
Customer churn counts the percentage of customers lost. Revenue churn (also called MRR churn) measures the percentage of revenue lost. They can differ significantly — if only low-paying customers churn, revenue churn is lower than customer churn. Conversely, losing a few enterprise customers can cause high revenue churn with low customer churn. Track both metrics, and also track net revenue churn which accounts for expansion revenue from remaining customers.
How should pauses, downgrades and win-backs be counted?
Decide each case in writing before you measure, because the choices move the rate by whole percentage points. A paused subscription with a scheduled restart is usually held out of the lost count and tracked separately, since counting it as churn and then again as a new customer on resumption double-counts one account. A downgrade to a cheaper paid tier is not logo churn at all, only revenue contraction, so it belongs in MRR churn rather than in the customers-lost field here. A win-back, a former customer who returns, is conventionally recorded as a new acquisition instead of a reversal of the earlier loss, which keeps closed cohorts fixed. A drop to a free plan is the ambiguous case: count it as churn whenever your denominator counts paying customers, as Churn Rate Calculator does.
How do I convert a monthly churn rate into an annual churn rate?
Churn compounds against the surviving base, so it never scales by simple multiplication. Annual churn = 1 - (1 - monthly churn)^12. A 5% monthly rate gives 1 - 0.95^12 = 1 - 0.540 = 46.0% annual, not 60%. Running it backwards, monthly churn = 1 - (1 - annual)^(1/12), which is what Churn Rate Calculator applies when you set the period toggle to yearly and enter a full-year loss figure.
What is the difference between voluntary and involuntary churn?
Voluntary churn is a deliberate cancellation: the customer judged the product not worth the price. Involuntary churn is a payment failure - an expired card, an insufficient-funds decline, or a bank fraud block ends the subscription with no decision from the customer at all. Both land in the customers-lost field here, but only involuntary churn responds to dunning work such as smart retry schedules, card-updater services and pre-expiry reminders, so separate them before choosing a remedy.
Why does cohort analysis give a different picture than a single blended churn rate?
A blended rate pools customers of every tenure into one denominator. Subscription hazard is normally front-loaded, with a disproportionate share of cancellations in the first weeks after signup before the customer reaches habitual use. A fast-growing company therefore carries many young, high-risk accounts and looks worse than it is, while one that stops acquiring looks better as its base ages. Cohort survival curves track each signup month separately and untangle those two effects.
What does negative churn mean, and how is net revenue retention calculated?
Negative churn describes a base where expansion revenue from surviving accounts - seat additions, tier upgrades, usage overage - exceeds the revenue lost to cancellations and downgrades. Net revenue retention = (starting MRR + expansion - contraction - churned MRR) / starting MRR, as a percentage. Above 100% the existing book grows with no new customers at all. This tool measures logo churn, so it still reports a positive rate even when NRR clears 100%.
Should the denominator be customers at the start of the period or the average during it?
Churn Rate Calculator uses the start-of-period count, the most common reporting convention, because it excludes people who signed up and cancelled inside the same window and so is not diluted by fresh acquisition. An average-of-period or end-of-period denominator yields a smaller figure, and heavy mid-period signups can make a fast-growing company's churn look artificially mild. Whichever you adopt, keep it fixed and label it, since the three are not comparable across reports.
