**The Four Operations:**
**Addition (+):** Combining quantities
- 5 + 3 = 8
- Commutative: a + b = b + a
**Subtraction (−):** Finding the difference
- 8 − 3 = 5
- Not commutative: a − b ≠ b − a
**Multiplication (×):** Repeated addition
- 4 × 3 = 12 (4 added 3 times)

History
The calculator has ancient origins. The abacus, developed around 2500 BCE in Mesopotamia, was humanity's first calculating tool. Chinese and Japanese versions refined it over centuries, and skilled operators could perform calculations remarkably quickly.
Mechanical calculators emerged in the 17th century. Blaise Pascal invented the Pascaline in 1642, a gear-based adding machine. Gottfried Leibniz improved upon it with the Stepped Reckoner (1694), which could multiply and divide.
The 20th century brought electronic calculators. The first all-electronic desktop calculators appeared in the 1960s, costing thousands of dollars. Texas Instruments and others revolutionized the market in the 1970s with pocket calculators.
