Frequently Asked Questions
What is the HRA exemption formula under Section 10(13A)?
Under Section 10(13A), your HRA exemption is the lowest of three calculated values: (1) the actual HRA received from your employer, (2) 50% of your basic salary if you live in a metro city (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, or Kolkata), or 40% for non-metro, and (3) the rent you actually paid minus 10% of your basic salary. Only the exempt portion is excluded from taxable income; the remainder is added to your gross salary. You must pay actual rent and can provide the landlord's PAN if annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh. HRA cannot be claimed under the new tax regime.
